Women’s golf achieves high WGCA team GPA ranking


CORAL SOURCES, Florida – The Sun Devil women’s golf program continues to be recognized for its academic achievements, as the WGCA announced its Scholar Team GPA awards.

Arizona State finished No. 18 in the GPA rankings of the top 25 Division I teams thanks to an incredible effort in class. The team finished the 2021-22 school year with a 3.81 GPA, earning them a Top 25 spot for the fourth time in program history. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment for our young women,” said coach Farr-Kaye. “We are extremely proud of the efforts of our entire team in class this year. It is something that we prioritized before the season and they have worked hard to achieve this ranking. We could not have done it without the guidance of our academic coach, Anthony Mendesand all support staff.

Since the award’s inception in 2004-05, the WGCA has honored the top teams in the GPA category. In 2017-2018, the WGCA began to separate the top 25 teams from each division (Division I, II and III). The Sun Devils were previously ranked in the Top 25 after the 2009-10, 2011-12 and 2017-18 seasons. The best finish came in 2017-18, when ASU finished No. 5 in the nation thanks to a 3.79 GPA. With 250 teams competing at the Division I level, the Top-25 distinction places Sun Devil Women’s Golf in elite territory.

The #18 GPA ranking follows Alexandra Forsterling, Alessandra Fanali, Amanda Linnier, Ashley Menneand Grace Summerhays be individually recognized earlier in the offseason for their efforts and achievements in the classroom. They were selected as WGCA All-American Scholars. The Scholar All-American Team selection criteria calls for a minimum GPA of 3.50, guidelines that make it one of the most prestigious All-American Scholar Teams in college athletics.

Academic recognition continues to pour in for Sun Devil Women’s Golf, as five team members earned a spot on the 2022 Spring Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. Alessandra Fanali, Alexandra Forsterling, Amanda Linnier, Breyana Matthewsand Ashley Menne all met the requirements of a GPA of 3.3 or higher and at least one year of residency at the institution. All five Sun Devils eligible for the accolade have landed on the honor roll, with ASU being one of only two teams in the Pac-12 to be able to make that claim.
