Syracuse three-star soccer rookie Malachi Davis pulls out and heads to Toledo instead

Syracuse, NY – Malachi Davis, a rookie in Michigan’s three-star defensive line, has disengaged from the Syracuse football class of 2022 and is heading to Toledo instead.

Davis announced his decision on Twitter, wishing Syracuse football and the rest of his 2022 promotion good luck. Shortly after announcing he was stepping down, Davis announced he was heading to Toledo instead.

Davis made a verbal commitment to Syracuse in March. At the time, he said he was thrilled to be the first Power-Five rookie in the history of the Holt High School football program, which is located in Holt, Michigan. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment on social media.

The 247 Sports website listed Holt as 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, with a list of offerings that also included Louisville, Vanderbilt, Air Force, and a number of Mid-American Conference schools. The website had reported that he was recruited by defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds and defensive coordinator Tony White.

He was one of four verbal pledges to Syracuse that were ranked among the country’s 1,500 best rookies by the website, which ranked him No. 1,332 in the country, No. 158 among defensive linemen. and # 35 in the state of Michigan.

The website currently lists Syracuse with 11 entries in the 2021 class, being part of a class that is ranked 13th out of 14 ACC teams and comes last in the conference in the average player rankings.

Syracuse’s defense was exceptional early in the season, helping the team off to a 3-1 start. The unit’s sack total of 14 in the last two games is the highest sack total in a two-game streak in program history. The Oranges are tied for second in the country, averaging 4.5 sacks per game. Defensive end Cody Roscoe’s 5.5 sacks also rank second in the country.

Syracuse has a pair of defensive rookies still running for the class of 2022, including their top-rated 247 Sports prospect. Q’yaeir Price of New Jersey is ranked the nation’s 660 rookie by 247 Sports, while Belizaire Bassette is a Florida football prospect.
