When the chefs pass: Mahomes is only the second quarterback in NFL history to win 40 of his first 50 career starts, joining Ken Stabler. Mahomes leads the NFL with 14 passing touchdowns this year, and his 119.6 quarterback rating is the AFC’s best. He throws a touchdown pass on every 10 attempts, which also leads the league. His two favorite weapons remain wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce. EDGE: heads.
Special teams: The Bills moved up from 19th to 12th place in the Football Outsiders weekly league special team rankings. Buffalo ranks second in NFL kickoff return average (32.6 yards) and first in punt coverage, allowing just 3.0 yards per return. Tyler Bass is 10 of 11 on field goals, with his only misfire coming from over 50 yards. The Chiefs, however, are sixth in the Football Outsiders standings. To be fair, they don’t have to do much. Kansas City has only kicked six times and has kicked three baskets in the first four games, a sign of the offense’s ability to finish practice. EDGE: heads.
Framing: “Sean McDermott coached by Andy Reid” is the new “Ryan Fitzpatrick wears his ring on the court” or “Chris Hogan played lacrosse”. We all know how close the relationship between the two coaches is. Reid’s team seemed to be the best prepared in the two meetings last year. The Bills have done their best to take the “bigger game because it’s next” approach, but we all know it’s a yardstick for the franchise. A victory at Arrowhead Stadium would reshape the image of the playoffs, with the Bills to be considered the favorites for the No.1 seed and home advantage. EDGE: heads.
