Munich Airport once again named one of the best in the world


One of aviation’s most prestigious rankings, the Skytrax World Airport Award 2021, has once again named Munich one of the best airports in the world.

Skytrax publishes its ranking every year

Skytrax, which publishes its rankings each year, assesses airports on many different criteria, including comfort, cleanliness, customer service and COVID-19 hygiene protocols. Some of the most improved airports have also been recognized in the ranking for their work in creating a better airport environment.

While Munich International Airport came in 6th place, other German airports did not fare as well. Hamburg Airport came in 26th place and Cologne in 41st place. Surprisingly, the new Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport in Berlin did not even make the top 100 worldwide!

The ranking pointed out that in 2021, airport ratings are different from most years, given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on air travel. COVID-19 informational signage, enforcement of social distancing rules, hygiene, and hand sanitizer availability all played a role in the 2021 rankings. Skytrax has also created a separate listing for 2021 awards. COVID-19 airport excellence, in order to honor the airports that are best coping with the health crisis.

Airports in Asia topped the rankings

Qatar’s only international airport, Doha Hamad came in first place, followed by other airports in Asia in the top five places. Tokyo Haneda, Singapore Changi, Seoul Incheon and Tokyo Narita all performed well for cleanliness, comfort and service, to maintain their place in the top 10 from 2020. Munich Airport slipped slightly from its position. fifth in the world in 2020, being overtaken by Tokyo Narita.

Other interesting winners of Skytrax’s 2021 ranking include Istanbul Airport named “World’s Most Improved Airport”, Singapore Changi being named as the airport with “World’s Best Airport Staff” and Guangzhou Baiyun Airport being named “World’s Best Airport in the 35-45 Million Passenger Category”.

Other European airports to feature in the top 10 include Swiss Airport Zurich and London Heathrow, in seventh and eighth place respectively.
