The best hospital in the DC area is Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia, for the fourth year in a row, according to US News & World Report’s annual rankings.
For patients in the DC area, the top medical center is again Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., according to US News & World Report’s 2022 “Best Hospitals” ranking.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the center has topped the regional ranking.
“It has worked very well in many surgeries, procedures and specialties that we are evaluating,” Ben Harder, chief health analyst at US News & World Report, said of Inova Fairfax Hospital.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center came in second in the region, followed by MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in third. US News & World Report said the DC metropolitan area included Alexandria and Arlington County, Virginia, and Bethesda and Rockville, Maryland.
The researchers queried patient data at more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide to create the ranking. US News & World Report publishes the ranking to help patients decide where to receive care, Harder said.
A multitude of factors were considered by researchers when ranking medical centers, including survival rates, patient experiences, and level of nursing care. But this year, the publication added a new category called “time at home.” It measured how well each hospital helped patients get home.
“Being able to be home with loved ones, instead of being in a hospital or an emergency room, is a very important aspect of their outcome,” Harder said.
The list also focuses on specialty care, such as cancer, cardiology and neurology. The researchers looked at data from adult specialties and ranked hospitals based on the effective treatments offered to patients. For example, cancer hospitals were rated on high performing oncology surgeries.
Also included in this year’s ranking, the publication added three new ratings: ovarian, prostate and uterine cancer surgeries. Harder said some readers requested the addition.
“We know that patients need different types of care,” he said. “For patients with prostate cancer, one of the most common forms of cancer, we wanted to provide them with meaningful, data-driven insights.”
For patients who must travel for quality care, the publication also has its honor list. The researchers considered a small group of 20 medical centers to be the best in the country.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota tops the list this year. He did it last year too.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles came second and NYU Langone Hospitals in New York City finished third. The DC area’s closest honor roll receipt is Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which tied for fifth.
