ANNAPOLIS, MD – A new study has ranked Annapolis as the fourth best city in the United States for runners, in part because it has the most events per capita of any city in the country.
The study was carried out by Runners Need, a UK-based running retailer. Its No. 4 rank means that Annapolis only lagged behind Santa Fe, New Mexico (No. 1); Madison, Wisconsin (# 2); and St. Petersburg, Fla. (No. 3).
Not only does Annapolis host more running events than any other American city, it has more than twice as many as neighboring Baltimore, according to the study.
Runners Need also ranked Annapolis No. 9 in the United States for access to green spaces and public parks, with over 89 per capita. This ranking was based on Trust of Public Land data on the number of public parks and gardens in each city.
However, the study found that the city had one of the worst air qualities in the United States – it ranked 46th, behind Boston, Las Vegas and Houston.
The city also ranked 24th for traffic (based on 2020 population data and delays attributed to traffic jams) and 22nd for crime (based on all crimes, in the exclusion of fraud).
A full infographic of the results can be found below, searchable by city, and a full list of criteria used for rankings can be found on the Runners Need website here.
